World on Film|Tabaco City, Albay, Philippines

Tabaco City – Moved here for 17 years already and I considered this as my hometown. I can’t imagine living in another city or province; have made a lot of good friends here. Can’t go back to Metro Manila where I grew up and stayed for 19 years.

Been shooting film cameras for three years now and I haven’t dedicatedly shot a digital camera during those years. I’m also not planning to buy one because I’m afraid that a digital camera might consume my creative hours to compensate on the expense.

There are only a few film photographers in Tabaco City but our community is getting tighter. We have an ongoing pass-a-camera project and there are 10 photographers who will use a Praktica MTL 50 with a 50mm lens. We’ll shoot in black and white and we’re planning to exhibit and our little group Camera Pasapasa being passionate about it is already a success. Most participants are newbies on film photography but they are now taking initiatives to explore analog photography better.

Tabaco City could be a good place for street photography because it is historically interesting. The light is great on sunny days and the people aren’t that aloof unlike in highly urbanized cities. It’s great not just for street photography but even for street portraits.

I shoot several cameras right now like some rangefinders, point and shoots, SLRs, and TLRs but I try not to be a gear head to focus better at making photographs.

I am currently working on several photography books. Hoping to save money so I can publish early next year. In fact, I’m planning to stay away from photography marketplaces to commit more hours shooting and working on my pending projects.

Hoping to have a darkroom community someday. A friend bought an enlarger and I’m yearning that his darkroom would be available soon. But I’m also saving up money so I can build my own. Friends are welcome; they can bring beer, wine, films, and stories in exchange of darkroom time.
